After an eventful race in Detroit, Enzo Fittipaldi is the new IndyNXT championship leader.
Fittipaldi, grandson of F1 champion and Indy500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi, brought home the win at the Detroit Grand Prix this past weekend. Making big moves as a rookie with only seven races under his belt, the HMD Motorsport driver has a total of four podiums, two of those being first-place finishes.
Fittipaldi faces tough competition for the championship. Teammate and fellow rookie, Tymek Kucharcyzk has matched pace with Fittipaldi throughout the season and is currently third in the championship with a win under his belt. Only seven points behind in second is Nikita Johnson with Cape Motorsport.
The championship leader strives to keep the momentum going and hold onto his lead in the championship battle, “I love racing, I’m a racer. I don’t go conservative. I’m on attack mode all the time.”
INDYCAR feeder series IndyNXT, is the perfect opportunity for young drivers to prove to high-level teams that they are worth taking a chance on. This creates the opportunity for competitive wheel-to-wheel racing. In the most recent race in Detroit, there were 141 on-track passes in 45 laps of racing. Despite damage to the nose of his car during the opening of the race, Fittipaldi kept the car on track, and executed an important double overtake in Turn 3 on Lap 29 to take the lead of the race.
Both of the HMD Motorsport driver’s wins in Detroit and at Indianapolis Motor Speedway have finished under a caution. In Detroit, Enzo was able to keep Abel Motorsports driver, Myles Rowe and teammate Kucharcyzk behind him until the caution came out after Max Taylor crashed into the barriers.
This weekend’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway will be the first oval race of the season and Fittipaldi’s first oval in his career. Looking ahead to his first oval race, Fittipaldi said, “For the ovals, Myles [Rowe] is definitely the benchmark in the series. I know he is very strong at the ovals, so I know he will be up there at Gateway.”
