Mark Walter’s “sprawling investment empire” is being federally investigated and scrutinized by US prosecutors who are “investigating potential financial improprieties at two of his insurance companies and at Guggenheim Partners LLC” (Bloomberg, 2026).

The prosecutors main question at hand is whether Delaware Life Insurance Co. and Clear Spring Life and Annuity Co.–both companies manage about $85 billion total like retirement annuities and life insurance– invested billions into private loans were “quietly connected to Walter’s own companies” and was this hidden (Ackert, 2026). None of this investigation currently is affecting Walter’s sports team investments yet, but could face potential scrutiny in the future.

Mark Walter is a businessman and investor, serving as the Chairman and CEO of TWG Global–a holding company that helps scale businesses across a variety of disciplines, including a TWG Motorsports division–and the CEO of Guggenheim Partners–an investment firm with more than $300 billion in assets under management (Forbes, 2026).

Walter also owns the MLB’s Los Angeles Lakers and Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). He is part-owner of NBAs Los Angeles Dodgers, WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, and Chelsea F.C. Under the TWG Motorsports subsidiary, founded by Walter, are Andretti Global (INDYCAR/INDY NXT), Cadillac Formula 1 Team, Spire Motorsports (NASCAR), Walkinshaw TWG Racing (Supercars), and Wayne Taylor Racing (IMSA).

We will have to wait and see the impact of this federal investigation on some of these fan-favorite motorsport teams. Until the investigation is concluded and the outcome is public, it is impossible to speculate what, if any, impact it could have on these many sports teams.

Though, Walter is no stranger to making controversial headlines in the news, from his visit to the White House after the Los Angelos Dodgers’ 2025 MLB World Series win to scrutiny over alleged financial connections to corporations profiting from the ICE detention centers and monitoring of immigrants in the United States.
